If you are retired or are looking at retirement, there is a good chance that you are one of the thousands of people who end up thinking, “So now what?” Baby boomers have always been a generation on the go, and if that first statement describes you, there is an excellent chance that you will keep on going! Retirement is typically a time that is set aside for leisure or travel, but there are many reasons why you might want to get back to work. Finances are certainly a concern; if you feel that your savings aren't sufficient when it comes to taking care of your needs, or if you need to retain a certain standard of living, a second career might be necessary. Furthermore, if you have spent most of your life active and less focused on leisure activities, you may find that retirement, with it's lack of structure and organized goals to be stifling. Some people see their second careers as a way to stay sharp, while others are choosing a second career as a way to do fulfilling and satisfying work.

You may wish to consider a career that, though it pays less than your original career did, offers you more in the way of creative work, or perhaps you want to find a career that will let you serve a community that has helped and supported you. For many people, second careers are designed to be significantly more fulfilling than the first might have been, and whether you find yourself building your dream company from the ground up or starting as an intern in a completely new industry, you'll have the satisfaction of living your dream.

One thing that a second career can offer you, especially if you find that social security has added some funds to your efforts, is better balance of the activities that you engage in. Many people find that they cannot find happiness or contentment in a situation that is 100% work or 100% play, and they find that they need some structure to their time. This structure can be amply provided for in a second career and this is one reason why so many people are looking into this option.

When you are looking into a second career, you'll find that the opportunities open up around you. When you started your first career, you may have been very young, unaware of what you really wanted or unaware of what the industry you ended up in really entailed. For so many people, a second career is a second chance, and it is one that they are much better equipped to make wisely. Many people find that the experience that they gathered in their first careers as instrumental to enjoying their second one.
