One fact of life that many of us need to cope with as we get older is that our bodies simply don't process things as well as they once did; this can lead to us feeling sluggish, gaining weight and simply not feeling as healthy as we did years ago. The culprit in this case is more than just a matter of slowing down; your metabolism might be what is at fault. Your metabolism is responsible for the rate at which your body processes the food that you take in and energy that it expends and the faster that your metabolism moves the more quickly you will burn off weight. The unfortunate thing is that many dieters drastically cut back on the calories that they consume only to find that they are not losing much weight at all or that they will put the weight back on as soon as they need to eat normally. Trying to change your weight through a sudden drop in calories is one way to depress your metabolism and to make it even harder to lose weight, and you'll find that to really effectively lose weight, you need to kick your metabolism into high gear. The first thing that you can think about when you are considering metabolism and your nutrition is that you shouldn't skip meals. Eat before you get ravenous so that you don't binge eat, and make sure that you eat lots of healthy foods like green, leafy vegetables and fruit. This will keep your energy level high as well as give your body the kind of sugar that is healthiest for it. You may wish to try to eat small meals more frequently, allowing you to keep your body's processes working well. Don't let yourself get overly hungry! Similarly, make sure that you drink plenty of water. There is a good chance that you are more dehydrated than you are aware of, and that by drinking at least eight cups of water a day, you will drastically improve your digestion. You'll find that drinking lots of water will help you empty the stomach and intestines, and reduce gas and bloating. Keeping yourself hydrated will also reduce headaches and fight off fatigue; if you are working out at all, you need to make sure that you are getting the water that you need. Remember that exercise is instrumental to losing weight. Muscle will speed up your metabolism, and as your body works more efficiently, you'll find that you are able to process food a great deal faster. Remember that it is also okay to start small and that every little bit helps. |
