As a member of the Baby Boomer generation, there is a good chance that you are annoyed at the thought of slowing down, but when it becomes slowing down mentally, annoyance turns to fear. Many of us have already witnessed our parents or our friends' parents experience a mental decline and we might fear the same things for ourselves and our families. The truth is that thanks to research done in the United States and Europe proves that mental problems with age are not a sure thing or inevitable in anyway.

Despite the fact that mental decline is not an inevitability, it is still something that bears some thought. Have you ever had trouble remembering someone's name, even though you were only introduced a short while ago? Have you noticed that you are slowing down when it comes to doing basic mathematical computations? These are things that happen to everyone from time to time, but if they have become a regular occurrence as you get older, it might be time to give them some thought.

The fact is, there are plenty of things that you can do to maintain your mental acuity no matter how old you are, and frankly, it's never too late or too early to start. Start by making sure that you are taking care of your health in general. High blood pressure, strokes and diabetes can increase your risk of Alzheimer's. You'll find that by keeping your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels down, you'll be able stay a great deal healthier.

Remember that you can do a great deal to keep your brain engaged. Through lively conversation with others and through writing, reading, games and puzzles, you'll find that you can stay sharper. This increases your brain activity and allows it to build reserves of brain cells and connections.

You'll find that one thing that you can keep in mind is that the more you extend outwardly, the better off you will be. The more your brain is stimulated, the healthier it is, so make sure that you do not stagnate. Stagnation often leads to depression, which can involve a fairly dramatic slowdown in terms of mental faculties, so make sure that you monitor yourself carefully for this. Take some time to make sure that you stay in touch with old friends.

Many Baby Boomers are finding to their delight that as they get older, they are getting more social. A busy professional or family life might have kept them back from the social scene in years past, but as more and more Baby Boomers find that they have free time on their hands, the more they are reaching out to each other.

Take some time to think about how you have treated your brain recently. You'll find that there is a great deal of importance in treating it right.
