10 Tips For Keeping The Activity Going PDF Print E-mail

It is important to stay active as the years go on – and no matter what fitness level you are currently at, staying active will help you make sure that you are able to keep it going.

1. Enjoy it! You want to be sure that you are always enjoying your physical activity. Choose something that you can enjoy, and make sure that you are having fun while you are out there. If you find that you are active but you aren't enjoying it, choose something that you do love, because you'll get more out of it.

2. Remember that you might have some bad days now and then. This happens to everyone. Take these in stride. If you feel tired or sluggish, don't set yourself up for failure by trying to do something you know won't work. Just start out by stretching or taking a very short walk, and see if you feel like doing more. If you don't, rest for that day, and try again tomorrow.

3. Don't let the weather get you down. If you find yourself in the middle of a cold winter, get all geared up for it with boots and cleats, and even poles that you carry while you're walking. You'll be able to stay warm no matter how cold it is, if you find a way to stay active and keep moving.

4. If you really can't get outside, for one reason or another, you can still keep active. You can do laps around your home or apartment, and if you have steps that you can go up and down, you'll get a good workout simply doing that. Make up an exercise routine that goes along with your favorite music, and march or dance on the spot if you really don't have a lot of room to move.

5. You can also go other places to walk laps inside, no matter what time of year it is. Malls, churches, or schools, are usually places where you can find room to walk. You might even find others who are doing the same thing to keep you company!

6. It is good to get in the habit of exercising, but remember that if you get bored from doing the same thing day after day, you might find that it isn't doing you any good any more. Try a different activity every once in a while, and remember that you can often go to try out a class or program for free the first time around. Perhaps you'll find something else worth doing.

7. If there is a part of your body that is giving you trouble, find a way to work around it and still keep the rest of your body moving. Even if you can't walk around, do exercises with your arms and torso, and keep them moving. This will even help the affected areas get stronger, as well.

8. Everyone likes rewards! If you can set rewards for reaching goals, both short term and long term, you'll be more likely to meet those goals, and you'll be able to treat yourself too.

9. It is always easier to do it together than alone. If you can find someone like a friend or neighbor who also wants to get in shape, you will be more likely to keep doing it for their sake as well a for your own.

10. Remember that if something goes wrong with your health, talk to your doctor about ways that being active can help you. Perhaps exercising is a better way to solve some medical problems than medication, you never know. And let him know how important your exercise is to you, so you can work together to figure out how to keep doing it.
