Everyone can benefit from being active. No matter what your age is, or how you are feeling, its never too late to start getting active and enjoying yourself. Here are some tips to get you started. 1. Stretching is important – so start with that. You can stretch while you are still lying in bed before you get up for the day, or before you've done very much. This will help the movement that you make all day long go better for you and feel better as well. 2. Even if you happen to live alone, or if the person you live with doesn't want to get active, there are still ways for you to do so without doing it by yourself. See if there are community activities that you can join, and talk to your family and friends about things that you can do on a regular basis to get active. If you broaden your interests, you might find a few great new activities that you've never heard of. 3. Remember that you don't have to do it alone. You can have the support of a friend or family member, and you can both encourage each other. If you join a group for people your age, you'll find that there are lots of people like you that want to get active too! 4. Set goals that you can actually meet. This might seem tough for some people, but if you are able to set realistic goals, you will have a better chance of success, and you will be much happier about it. 5. Remember that you can fit physical activity into your own schedule. Pick a time each day that is convenient for you, and get active. If you don't feel good on a particular day, let yourself rest, but be sure to get back into it when you are feeling better. 6. If you write down what you've done on a calendar, and keep track of what you plan to do in the same way, you'll be more likely to actually get it done, and you can have a way of actually charting your progress. 7. Remember that it might be much easier on you to have shorter and more frequent sessions, instead of having longer sessions. You can fit it into your busy schedule in this way, and you can use up your maximum energy in this way as well. 8. Find things that are happening in your life and use them for movement opportunities. If you take the stairs and not the elevator, or use a rake instead of a leaf blower, or even walk to the store instead of drive, you'll be able to fit your activity into things that you have to do each day regardless. 9. Remember, you'll probably have a few lapses, but you shouldn't give up on yourself. You might start and stop, or restart a couple of times, but don't get discouraged and always keep coming back to it. 10. Remember that good nutrition is important, but eating good alone can not make you healthy. You have to be sure that you are also being physically active as well. |
